Former NFL Linebacker Uses Adaptive Training
to Redefine Recovery
By Terrance Abrams
CARROLLTON, Texas (AP) , Former NFL linebacker David Vobora has built a new career helping people with physical disabilities redefine what recovery looks like, replacing sympathy with strength through the Adaptive Training Foundation.
The nonprofit organization, founded in 2014, provides free adaptive performance training to veterans, first responders and civilians living with life-altering injuries. What began as one athlete helping another has evolved into a nationally recognized program that bridges the gap between rehabilitation and independent living.
Vobora said the organization's mission is about more than physical fitness.
It focuses on restoring confidence, purpose and identity after trauma.
"People think it's their missing limb that got them to us," Vobora said during an interview.
The idea for the Adaptive Training Foundation was born after Vobora met retired U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Travis Mills, a quadruple amputee injured while serving in Afghanistan. At the time, Vobora had never trained an amputee, but he believed athletic training could offer something traditional rehabilitation often could not: renewed purpose.
"I'll train you like an athlete," Vobora recalled telling Mills. "If you have a human body, you're an athlete whether you compete at sport or not."
That conversation eventually inspired the creation of the foundation, which now serves hundreds of adaptive athletes through its free nine-week ReDefine program. Participants receive personalized coaching, adaptive fitness training, housing, meals and ongoing support at no cost.
That philosophy shapes the culture inside the Adaptive Training Foundation, where athletes begin and end workouts with mindfulness and breathing exercises designed to strengthen both the body and the mind.
Today, the organization continues to expand its reach. Vobora recently announced plans for a new $20 million campus in North Texas while continuing to host the Life After podcast, where guests share stories of resilience following life-changing events.
